Heimlich Heroes™ in the Time of Coronavirus

Second in a Blog Series: We Were Virtually There at Virtual NASN 2020

Not an easy decision, this year NASN (National Association of School Nurses) transitioned their yearly event into a virtual experience. Heimlich Heroes™ has, for many years, enjoyed working hand-in-glove with school nurses. Likewise, they’ve consistently supported us and brought our training program into their schools and communities.

School nurses play a critical role in students’ health, safety and learning environment. NASN’s mission focuses on optimizing student health and learning through the school nursing practice. Their mission is perhaps more important today than ever! School nurses are braced to keep their students safe from COVID-19. You can imagine the tremendous challenges in keeping children and staff safe, as in-person/blend of virtual and in-person classes resume.

A Seat at the Table: Winning Together for Student Health

NASN2020 educational program included many typical general sessions, breakout sessions and posters. Additionally, this year also included an exhibit hall, annual business meeting, award recognition, vendor demonstrations, and opportunities for engagement and interaction—all in a virtual environment.

Ongoing topics included bullying, teen vaping, and technology and today’s youth. Among current topics covered were childhood bereavement, COVID chronic absenteeism, and student mental health. The virtual keynote closing was entitled “Taking Your Seat at the Table: Be Brave, Be Dynamic, Make it Count!”. It outlined NASN’s framework for the importance of student health. The session detailed the role school nurses and educators play in supporting the whole child.

Heimlich Heroes Was Happy to Participate!

As a yearly exhibitor Heimlich Heroes took our (virtual) seat at the table, as well. We furnished electronic materials for our Virtual Booth, as well as our pre-recorded video for the Virtual Demo Room. Although we missed seeing visitors in person, our video highlighted how important and engaging our training is. Many attendees—both old friends and new acquaintances—visited our booth.

Despite how different NASN’s virtual event was, it was successfully and well-attended.

School Nurses, Staff and Parents All Want the Same Thing

This year, of all years, Heimlich Heroes training may be a welcome virtual and/or in-class lesson. During training, students and staff can take a break and focus on the easy-to-learn Heimlich Maneuver®. And the hands-on practice makes it fun learning the lesson that lasts a lifetime.

As school reopens, nurses take on a huge responsibility: keeping each other safe. In the end, everyone wants the same thing—they love the kids and want only the best for them. In this year of change and uncertainty, it was comforting that NASN held their annual event (even virtually). Because of Heimlich Heroes’ respect and admiration for them, we continue our commitment and support of school nurses everywhere.
