Super Heroes have the ultimate “super power”

Besides the glitz and glamor, can you guess what these celebrities have in common?

Cher, Simon Cowell, Chris Fowler, Elizabeth Taylor, Goldie Hawn, Walter Matthau, Carrie Fisher, Dick Vitale, news anchor John Chancellor, former President Ronald Reagan, and Jack Lemmon...

Each of these famous people was saved from choking to death by a Heimlich “Super Hero”. Since 1974, the Heimlich Maneuver has saved the lives of more than 50,000 people—famous and not-so-famous.

The Heimlich Maneuver is the real “star”

Cher is proof that mundane things happen to celebrities, too. She was backstage at the rehearsal of a Broadway play when she starting choking on a vitamin. She apparently tried to dislodge it with some bread. When that didn't work, Robert Altman gave her the Heimlich Maneuver.

Tom Brokaw rescued news anchor John Chancellor, when he sent a chunk of cheese went down the “wrong pipe” in 1979. Luckily Tom was there. The Heimlich Maneuver was only a few years old then, and had recently been demonstrated on his show. As Chancellor became red and then very gray, Brokaw performed the Heimlich Maneuver. Out popped the cheese, and Chancellor went on the air a few hours later, as planned.

In 2006, Page Six reported Ellen Barkin was eating dinner when she jumped up and screamed. CAA agent Kevin Huvane gave her the Heimlich Maneuver, and out popped out a piece of shrimp.
