Everyday Heroes

Have you ever seen someone choking? It’s really scary! That’s exactly what fourth grader Mariyah thought, when she saw her friend, Ryan, choking at lunch.

Classmates Mariyah and Ryan received Heimlich Heroes™ training at their elementary school. Their school nurse presented the lessons to all of the 4th graders as the school year began. Then, about 8 weeks later, the Heimlich Heroes' office received a call from the nurse. She was in tears. Because that day, Ryan began to choke on a piece of bread during lunch.

Now, because of his training, Ryan knew how to signal that he was choking (he put his hand to his throat). Mariyah saw this and asked if he was choking. When he nodded, she called for help, walked around the table and performed the Heimlich Maneuver® on him. Before any of the teachers could get to him, 9-year old Mariyah saved Ryan’s life! The school nurse called right after this happened and she was filled with emotion. She was so grateful for the opportunity to train her kids. She told us she plans to repeat this training every year with the new class of fourth graders.
